All about sales

Pros

A good place to start to learn about the business as a Student Optician. Other associates were friendly and helpful, same with the lab.

Cons

It's a constant drive for sales from the top down, and it puts a lot of pressure on everyone. I worked on other tasks, such as three-day callbacks to customers, properly checking lab orders (ex. the Pd, OC height and Rx) and cleaning them, and also merchandising while others just stood at the front waiting for customers doing nothing. When one customer came in, I paused my other tasks and proceeded to wait at the front to wait to serve customers. The problem lies when they don't notice any of the extra work you put in, and only look at the sales. While at the same time promoting awesome customer service. Sales goals are crazy high (ex. Saturday 8hr shift, sales goal of $3,000). Then if you don't meet these goals constantly, they greatly reduce your hours, I was reduced from 12 hours a week to 0 hours for 3 weeks.

Pros

Flexible Hours Great Learning experience in eye industry Nice discount on glasses 1 free eye exam yearly

Cons

Lack of management, favoritism, did not follow through with what was promised. Overall while being employed there I was unhappy with the lack of training and management style. The store manager would expect everyone around her to train the new employees and when asked a question she made it apparent that "you should know this" or would give you some type of attitude. Unfair treatment. The turn over was high. Originally was hired as a lab tech, they kept me on the retail floor to sell, even when i expressed that I wanted to be in the lab and they needed extra hands. Also didnt help when new hires were getting paid more than I was when they had no experience. Unfair removal of supervisor codes. When asked why she completely ignored me as if i was invisible. Store manager scheduling was unfair, when it was black friday or Christmas eve, she had the entire staff work expect for herself, when asked why she said, "I just dont work on Holidays". Because it was a sales position, they PUSH YOU to sell multiples, and upsell. HIGHLY quota driven. Conversion happens everytime someone walks through the doors, if that number doesnt match the amount of sales that day, quota goes down, which makes it hard to meet goals, since 1. its in a mall. 2. not everyone is ready to spend $500 that day 3. not everyone is interested in buying pairs of glasses. I once had the highest sales in the store and the manager asked me how much i made on my check.....

Pros

Free eye exams every year! Able to try the newest materials before they are available to the public. First dibs on new frames and great associate discount 1 to 2 times per quarter.

Cons

No more labs in DFW. They say put the customer first, but are only looking at the sales and if goals are met. Always changing things without giving proper hours to help cover the changes that need to be made. Lens pricing is outrageous, compared to other stores around the area. Wants you to get the sale but won't match price in many cases. When your store gets a new GM, they never know what they are doing. Also even if you have lots of retail experience and optical experience, your pay will suffer.
