Hi there, Thanks for your review, and more importantly, thanks for the work that you do for the team and our customers. I'm glad that you have noted our nice work culture. It's very important to our success and it makes the environment we work in a happier one for all the team. A lot of work goes into building and preserving this. In terms of your other comments, the role is one where a lot is expected and the core hours are busy and challenging. We are growing quickly and learning more and more how to drive better outcomes in terms of improved work/life balance. We have made some strides on this in recent months, particularly as we've supported the team through this latest lockdown with OctoKids, continued yoga, and nutritionists to name but a few initiatives. More importantly though, we've continued to offer even more flexibility for the team as individuals, as opposed to a one size fits all solution. Our approach to HR is different to traditional organisations. When concerns are raised they are dealt with by leaders across the business quickly. Leaders in our business drive accountability from one another. For instance today, I worked with a member of the team to overcome a concern they raised with me last Thursday. I'm sorry to learn that this wasn't the case for you and thanks again for raising it. Please feel free to reach out to me directly if there's anything you wish to discuss. I'll make sure we do better on this from now on. Cheers, James Doyle Head of Talent, Culture & Space

Pros

Friendly team, nice managers. Most of the time able to leave work at work at 5:30 and get on with our lives but not always.

Cons

Unpaid overtime at no notice and targets driven although they claim not to be.

Hi there, Thanks for sharing your review and giving us an insight into what we do well, as well as how we can move this towards a 4 or 5 star review in future. It’s nice to see your positive comments on your team mates and managers. We’re all working towards the same goal and the people we select to come work with us at Octopus are really an amazing bunch committed to looking after our customers, and playing our role in building a sustainable future. During the recruitment and onboarding process, we make an extra effort to be clear about the fact we do ask for discretionary effort from our team members. We reinforce the message that it’s not a traditional clock in and out 9-5 job. I’ll make sure to be even more up front about this message from now on, as it wasn’t effective in your case. There have been times recently when we have asked the team to give some discretionary effort to help our customers out during this winter period. There will be times in the future when we ask for this as well. This effort is recognized in many different ways. When joining Octopus Energy we give all members of staff equity so that we can work together on building both an incredible place to work and to change the way energy works in the UK and across the world. The discretionary effort we put in directly increases our valuation. We saw the fruits of this earlier in the year when all staff members who owned equity saw the value in their shares and had the opportunity to sell them. There’s further recognition in the money we spend on social & team gatherings, as well as vouchers, the covid allowance and the upcoming xmas budget. As ever, I’d really welcome the opportunity to discuss this in person with you. If there’s further explanation needed, I’m available to you. Looking forward to your continued growth and success with Octopus over the months and years ahead, as well as the value you can obtain from being part of everything we’re doing. Cheers, Josh Riordan

Pros

- Really great people all around. Pretty much everyone who joins is a good fit even if they’re all different kinds of developers - Lots of difference types of work and opportunity for development - Freedom to make decisions including design decisions - Generally a high standard of coding (we have lots of documented conventions which means our code looks nice and is well structured) - Team atmosphere. Someone is always willing to help out and there is no competition. - (In normal times) Friday evening get together with drinks - Regular socials

Cons

- Rapid growth means structures aren’t quite in place yet (though it’s actively being worked on) - Working more with external clients means there are more pressures coming in from the outside and we lose some of what makes us “us” - There used to be a bit more freedom in terms of what things you’d like to work on whereas now it’s a bit more prescribed
