Pros

The people with feet on the ground are phenomenal. Most everyone is smart, friendly, engaging, and willing to push the boundaries of innovation. Even when stuck in a bad project or situation, it has been easy (pre-DOGE) to navigate somewhere else that better-fits your style and strengths,

Cons

Performance achievement process is a total black box. The claim it's merit-based instead of time-at-level, but then less deserving folks get promo'd over superstars bc of time-at-level (even if they don't admit it). The CEO change from John Goodman to Ron Ash has been HEINOUS, and not just because of the start of the DOGE-era (though that has certainly made things worse). Communications don't come proactively.. things trickle down the grapevine as rumors until finally we get official word a week later. An example is when they scrapped the bench entirely due to DOGE - everybody heard about it a week or two before we received any sort of communication from up top. There are certainly some MDs who care about the people at AFS, but many of them are extremely toxic leaders who clearly view the people as cogs in the machine. It's super obvious and everyone from down below resents these folks. Anyone reading this who has worked here likely knows at least one MD/Director who this reminds them of.

Pros

Great benefits, competitive pay, different ways to build your career

Cons

The company is more concerned about expanding and hiring as many people from the outside as they can, without even looking or giving priority to internal candidates. Unlike Deloitte, they do not put a large emphasis on learning and growing into a role. Instead, they prefer that you be an expert right out the door, even if you are switching Career trajectory‘s for instants from software engineering to cloud engineering. Depending on the team you get, there will be good camaraderie, but the majority of the contracts are out for themselves, and does maintain a backstabbing culture to a degree. The offices are decent, but are definitely More subpar in comparison to other consulting firms. The healthcare is pretty good but each plan comes with a minimum of $700 deduction, which isn’t great for commercial level. Not to mention, 401(k) matching does not start for at least a year then after that a vesting schedule will apply. If you want to get ahead, that is solely dependent on the work you do with your current project. Firm contributions are far and few in between, and I would not consider this to be legitimate consulting.

Pros

Originally was a great place to work, great benefits, hard workers

Cons

Unfortunately, things have gone quickly downhill. I don't know if it is related to the current administration shutting down many government contracts or if it is related to the new CEO, Ron Ash (maybe both), but this year SO many Operations and HR employees have been laid off. Leading up to the layoffs, we were aware that they were coming and were told that our performance would factor into the decisions of who was let go. But they were not. They chose the highest paid to start with and the layoffs continued regularly. To the point that they had very few employees left doing the work that everyone who left the company were doing... on top of their prior jobs. That has now so badly impacted those who remained that many of those employees have now left with no future employment lined up.
