Pros

Large stable company that is a Fortune 40 company with an eye towards going global.

Cons

1.) Old guard management that was generally promoted from within, has been replaced with aggressive outsiders that have literally caused a mass exodus of very-very talented people. 2.) A much ballyhooed GPS (Grow Perform Succeed) system that is supposed to be a tool for yearly reviews, bonuses etc, has turned into a laughing stock that is highly ridiculed silently by rank and file employees. 3.) An outsourcing agreement with TCS and IBM that threatens all remaining IT workers.

Pros

1. Work-life balance definitely a plus. 2. Easy to be seen as a rock-star with very little effort or if you just don't care. Think Peter Gibbons in Office Space.

Cons

1. Benefits are horrible. 2. Matching 401k is low, and doesn't kick in until you've put in a year of service. 3. Culture is definitely geared towards brick-and-mortar stores and not the online space. 4. Walgreens IT is running the show, but they don't have a clue. 5. Unilateral decisions are made across the board without input from people who actually understand issues or have insight to potential issues that could happen. 6. Too many self-declared 'experts' who think they have all the answers, but in reality... 7. Move to PTO time off has short-changed employees. 8. Paraphrasing a quote from a development director: "Building software to 'change the world' is a very Northwest attitude. In the Midwest [Walgreens headquarters] it's about keeping the status quo."

Pros

Just like any job it depends on the people around you. I worked with some good people that I will miss. Job security was good.

Cons

The whole restructuring of management left a real bad taste in my mouth. Can't believe how this was handled. The people who work the hardest are the ones who get screwed.
