Pros

Lots of feedback and a great place to learn about great leadership philosophies.

Cons

Although great leadership is the company's main focus, they are fooling themselves by thinking they develop great leaders. The concepts and philosophies that the company is built on are sound, but upper management's adherence to those philosophies falls terribly short. Promotions are earned based on politics and personality, not talent and execution. In addition, the company maps out your path for you, not always considering what you actually want to do. Instead of driving your own professional development, decisions are made for you then shoved down your throat. If you don't agree with the direction they want you to go, you either have to grin and bear it or you will be labeled as a problem and will be "performance-managed out." The "people conversations" that happen behind the scenes (in vans, restaurants, offices and airplanes) at Target are sometimes disturbing and often differ from what the individual TM is being told about their own future. It's disappointing and sometimes deceitful.

Pros

Target is a dynamic company to work for. It is always changing and very fast-paced if that's your sort of thing. If you're surrounded by good leadership, then your experience will be enjoyable. Much of that falls on your Store Team Leader and your District Team Leader. Another thing is that management is very visible and involved at your store, so they aren't a mysterious group of people. The work can be enjoyable and the pay is good for someone who is just out of college with no previous management experience. The work is challenging, but you feel accomplished when you see the results of developing your team.

Cons

Though the company claims to be all about communication, no one really tells you anything. In my case, the lack of communication from my superiors is what defeated me and caused me to leave the company. Retail is also a tough industry, which is hard to understand until one actually gets there. That said, when you're interviewing and the company is trying to recruit you, they conveniently leave out the actual stuff that you will be doing once you get in the store. They make it look easy to get promoted, even to headquarters when those goals are nearly impossible. You also don't have a choice in the exact department that you will be managing, and people are often forced to change in the middle of their training. The hours are also long and there is no overtime pay. The employee discount isn't great either, and you must only use cash unless you sign up for their credit card. In addition, if you do decide to sign up for their credit card, beware that if you miss a payment you can get written up for it and possibly lose your job eventually.

Pros

For salaried team members at the stores level - Great opportunities for advancement Positive work environment Consistent feedback (both positive and critical) A focus on leadership development Excellent communication from headquarters as well as senior management Encouragement of work/life balance At the store level, required to stay active...great for those who don't appreciate sitting at a desk all day Empowerment - within your role. Every other weekend off (almost unheard of in retail) Don't have to worry about what to wear to work - it's Red & Khaki! Working at the stores level for Target, I am challenged every day. Managing over 100 people and up to 15 different areas of a store can be very intense at times. I appreciate the focus on leadership development that Target has, and know that in one year with Target, I've grown far beyond where I was as a leader. You learn that you can't be a leader without a team of people, and that therefore it's all about your people. Managing talent is a huge focus as your team will make you successful or will help you fail. I definitely recommend target to those who are: ...interested in a company where there's unlimited growth (and almost the same in income). ...able to be on their feet all day, full of energy (thankfully there's a Starbucks in most Targets today!) ...quick to learn new things and can be resourceful in an appropriate manner ...able to manage many things at once, multi-tasking beyond what others might think is possible

Cons

For salaried individuals - 50 hour workweeks or up to 70 at some times...but the leaders know when you work long days and try to give you time off when they can. It's retail, so there's little time off during the holidays.
