Badly disorganized, game of thrones amongst managers, PSC/promotion obsessed.
Pros
You are dealing with massive scale, and it forces you to level up and think about really big problems.
Cons
The incentive structure is completely broken. When I first started I was shocked at how obsessed everyone was over their performance review. I thought it was temporary, but no, it's a non-stop thing. Everyone is trying to find a team with a manager that likes them that will help them get promoted. It's never about finding a project you are interested in working on. The managers are constantly hopping around to other teams because they are incentivized to have the most people underneath them. Engineers get "impact" by completing the following equation: I changed X by Y% which resulted in Z (user growth, time spent, etc). This means working on bigger projects with tougher to quantify impact is career suicide (no matter what they tell you otherwise). As a result the underlying infra of the apps is terrible and there's nobody that is really incentivized to fix it. There's a reason FB can't build anything new.
