Pros

Obtained pretty good experience, but not worth it for the long term

Cons

I worked as a part timer at Lens crafter for a year and all i can say is that this is a tragic situation for employees who are actually working in the stores as opticians or eye care associates. The company is totally mismanaged. Its the typical situation of Corporate taking all the money and not distributing it to the people that actually are doing all all the real work. The compensation is awful, an un livable wage for a child that lives with their parents perhaps. All this is preposterous because the sales in many of the stores are significant and should be enough to offer attractive pay. I have yet to find a person in the field from this company with a kind word to say about it. ( though i'm sure people in corporate are glowing about how great this company is to work for ) And yes, its true they have the balls to send you home with out pay if business is slow. In fact i remember one day the company was receiving a shipment of what had to be 5000 dollars of new displays all carefully individually packaged in boxes. The shipping had to be a couple thousand alone. All this was totally unnecessary. While receiving these orders, they were sending people home. I had three managers, all with absolutely no optical experience in 8 months. What kind of optical company hires people with no optical experience or back ground to pretest and sell people glasses. I can't imagine a company like this surviving much longer.

Pros

salary. paid time off, benefits. Associates who want to learn better ways to do their job even though there is no time to do so.

Cons

After 10 years with the company and reviews at "4" somebody has to get the blame for a slow down in the economy. Traffic is down approx. 2000 people per month but when you bring this to upper management they say that that is just an excuse and label you as not "BRAND RIGHT". The state of the opticianry field is sad and Lenscrafters is a big part of this. It is getting to the point where (if they are lucky) there is one person in a store who can properly adjust a pair of glasses. Training is out the window and countless pairs of eyeglasses get returned because they are never fitted properly. I have stated this to upper management in the past among all the new ways to sale glasses how about training how to properly adjust them but the only concern is "selling". Frustrated customers bring in their eyewear complaining of vision or fit problems but all they end up doing is refunding because no one has any idea how to correct a problem. We are given pressure to sell progressives that are not always the best fit for the customers because "they are the most expensive". As a certified optician I am now considered a problem and must be let go in the near future. lenscrafters must realize that in the past many customers came back because of the PEOPLE!!! Now they are becoming like all the rest of the chains. Independent Doctors Rejoice!! Customers want their eyes cared for by professionals not "sales people' and as more seasoned opticians lose their jobs you will gain the advantage in this market once again.
