Pros

Lots of autonomy, good amount of freedom in terms of how to tackle solving problems, good sponsorship of technical learning and conferences, has a bunch of smart people to work with, work with folks from all over the world

Cons

Teams and SMT in the UK will make decisions with little transparency or visibility. Working from non Europe timezone means you will miss out on important because London very much is still figuring out how to actually work async remotely. Weird pressure to use AI in development in tooling and theres a weird toxic AI optimism where opposing view points are not welcome. Kinda feels opposite of a big green dent right? Delivery pressure in certain teams is real. Slack information overload on the regular. Your experience at Kraken will depend on your manager.

Pros

- Very software engineering led, great for engineers - Huge opportunity for ownership - Lots of autonomy - Working on exciting problems in energy, perhaps one of the only companies it's possible to work on some of these problems at - The parent company, Octopus Energy Group, has been incredibly successful in a short space of time so there's a real feeling of momentum and growth

Cons

- Poor approach to pay, lack of transparency on bandings, below market rate pay & compensation, lack of clear progression, etc. - Processes stuck in a startup mentality which are struggling to scale to the size Kraken has become - No real HR, so this responsibility falls on managers; for an employee this can be great if your managers good, terrible if they're bad - Poor communication between senior management and the rest of the org which has gotten worse as the org has grown in size

Pros

- It seems that everyone is bought into the Octopus vision and wants to make a different to the planet - There are some incredibly bright people here and the people I'm working with are really helpful and have given a lot of time to helping me understand the product - I've been given some massive customers to manage, so it's great to feel that confidence in me from my manager - Small things like free food, free hygiene products in the toilets, staff classes (yoga, painting etc.) and free Friday beer show that the company cares about its employees - The technology used here really is on another level to the competition, particularly Kraken - Friday Family Dinners (basically an all-company meeting on Fridays at 4pm) are always well attended, informative and generally very funny, as Greg likes to have a laugh and put people at ease - The offices are great and a lot of people work from them

Cons

- It's very minor, but as a non-technical person working in a tech company, the induction was a bit dev-heavy in parts (and therefore well over my head), but I passed on that feedback, so that may change in future.
