Lack of committment by senior leadership (CEO, CxO) to expand into new areas of opportunity outside of laptops and desktops (e.g. Services, Enterprise Sales force), mid level managers spending too much time/energy on administrative vs leading and strategic plans; unwillingness to better understand customer needs

Pros

Lively environment, dynamic, lots to do. Compensation is fair for the current environment, although for the last few years bonuses have not been awarded. Regular Rank and File (grunts) are very commited to making Dell a success.

Cons

Management does not truly know how to be successful for the future. Everyone is too afraid of Michael Dell plus his vision is dated. Managers in general seem to take on a personna of "What would Michael do" but they are not mind readers and seem to overly try to control the their departments. This can be very frustrating , it seems you can never be correct on your own and that you are chasing this moving target. The "What would Michael do" managers all have different perceptions of what Michael may want. Also, managers are trying to assure that they don't get downsized andfeel they need to show how indispensable their inputs are to the company. The results are crippling.

Pros

Considerable opportunity to learn new skill sets and alter your career path. You often times do not have opportunities to move between career paths elsewhere. The managers I've worked with in the past have almost always invested considerable time in my development but professionally and personally which is a huge plus

Cons

Entirely too risk averse and unwilling to be first to market with anything. While our business model was at one time innovative and successful enough to avoid being cool and cutting edge, that's no longer the case but our leadership seems to be stuck in yesteryear. Success in business is all about taking calculated risks to jump ahead of the pack, not about maintaining the statues quo.
