I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Slack in Mar 2021
Interview
There were about 5 rounds of interviews:
1. Recruiter: the conversation was casual (I came in through a referral), we discussed the role and what I was looking for and explained how my experiences fit the position.
2. Hiring Manager: I spoke with the HM and did a basic behavioural interview, connecting my background to the CSM qualities and sales experiences I've had. Nothing too tricky, and she was very pleasant and interested in my answers.
3. Chronological Interview: This was with the HM and a peer where they asked probing questions about every part of my resume, starting from when I was in college through now, to really get an understanding of who I was as a person and what my background was. It was very interesting, because no interviewer ever asks why you chose your major or how that contributed to your work experiences!
4. Case Presentation: I had to create a presentation with various different questions, ranging from who I am, why this job fit me, how I would implement Slack at xyz, what my most difficult client interaction has been, and my start plan should I join the company. It was a fun presentation to put together and I presented to the HM and her peer I'd met before, and another, more senior peer. They asked probing questions and I could tell they were paying attention to the details.
5. Senior Peer Interview: Similar to the HM interview, I think this was a special circumstance because Slack is going through changes with the Salesforce acquisition, but it was mostly behavioral questions with time for me to ask any follow up questions afterwards.
I absolutely loved the interview process - it felt human and like the company and team cared about me and were really excited to have the opportunity to have me on the team, not that I was lucky to be interviewing with them. Not only that, but the recruiter was so transparent and responsive with everything from what to expect compensation-wise to how to prepare for each round of the interviews. It was truly a great experience.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
1. Why Slack / CSM?
2. Have you ever pushed back on a client?
3. What do you think your biggest learning curve would be in this role?
4. Describe a similar project you've done and what was the outcome?
I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Slack (New York, NY) in Feb 2021
Interview
The hiring process was great from start to finish! This took roughly 4 weeks to complete but the Recruiting team stayed very involved throughout the whole process and made themselves available anytime I had questions. They also made sure you were prepped before each round. This process consisted of 4 rounds:
- Recruiter screening
- 1:1 with hiring manager
- 60 min resume review with hiring manager and CS leader
- 60 min presentation

Interview
My interview experience with Slack was excellent! I enjoyed speaking with all of the individuals involved.
Interview process:
1. Recruiter Screening
2. Hiring Manager Interview
3. Chronological Interview
4. Presentation
Recruiter Screening: The recruiter that I worked with was very responsive and provided timely updates. She also helped me prep for the interviews and was available to answer any questions I had.
Hiring Manager: The hiring manager was engaging and showed interest in getting to me as a person. This round was for 45 minutes and was asked questions on topics such as: stakeholder management, cross-functional partnership, collaboration, etc. Make sure you have examples that you can share.
Chronological Interview: I highly recommend prepping well for this round as it is a deep dive of your resume. Mine was scheduled for 90 minutes but can be longer depending on the position. Few questions to think about are: What were some of the challenges from moving position A to position B? what prompted the move? what would your manager say were your strengths and weaknesses? Why Slack?
By the time I moved to the final round, I had accepted another position at my current company so can't share experiences regarding the presentation round.
I also recommend connecting with other CSMs at slack to learn more about their day to day. I was fortunate enough to connect with one and she was extremely helpful in answering all of my questions thoroughly.
Good luck!
