Pros

Free Membership, some nice colleagues and met some great members.

Cons

Absolutely awful time working here. Switched clubs for ease of commute and staff and management just as bad. Management are nasty and manipulative. No appreciation for good work and effort put in to help customers. Was once told off by management for helping a member solve an issue. "Treat others as you'd like to be treated" is non existent from management to floor staff.

Pros

Great training opportunities for junior and starting staff. Career development within the business rapid and opportunities are various. Salary minimum wage with additional staff incentives (Including complimentary membership for self and one other, tribe discounts across Virgin affiliated companies, discount on fitness qualifications, swimming instructor qualifications etc)

Cons

Lack of company operational support and structure at higher/middle management leads to poor communication, unfair performance models, unrealistic FTE departmental management structures. With significant head office staff turn over of staff the operational support at club level is never satisfied. Leading to constant change in focus and lack of understanding of priorities at club level. This leads to underperforming financial results at non invested or challenging clubs. There seems to be more interest in wasting money on poor development options, than caring for the existing body of staff at club level. No control over annual budgeting process, leads to a lack of buy in at club level by management and staff. This causing an increase in staff attrition. Poor human resource processes and timelines, leading to operational concerns with replacing staff, managing staff etc

Pros

Free membership for you plus a friend is a big selling point and the Virgin Tribe website has good offers for employees. If you’re lucky enough to go to the annual Star Awards, you’ll feel like you’ve been invited to The Oscars: it’s an incredible night out! The story of how of our business started is fascinating and still attracts many enthusiastic people to want to become a part of our team.

Cons

Virgin Active is obsessed with “Activeness” (although ask a handful of our employees to explain what this means…not many will know) but has lost much of its “human-ness” over the years. We’re asked to apply the Golden Rule (“treat others the way you want to be treated”) but this doesn’t seem to work both ways and we’re often asked to go WAY above and beyond the call of duty to achieve our company goals…and this happens again and again. “Change is the only constant” is a fitting expression we use, though we regularly go full circle on what we believe to be important / no longer important. At Head Office in particular, roles are regularly being created and then being made redundant not long afterwards which makes following the strategy challenging! Despite the perks mentioned above, many people simply can't afford to survive on the salaries paid at most levels and would tell you they'd rather get a bigger slice of the pie!

Many thanks for taking the time to share your comments, I'm glad to hear that you enjoy the benefits on offer to our team members and I'm delighted that you were one of the 700 employees to attend the annual 'Star Awards' it truly is an amazing event. We are very proud of the focus on 'activeness' and we are currently introducing new strategies to make sure this lands for all employees as they join us and throughout their career with Virgin Active. I would like the opportunity to discuss your points in more detail, please contact me on: david.stacey@virginactive.co.uk if you would like to chat through. David, UK Operations Director.
