Pros

Many great things about the company. Company mission is clear and a culture is being established by senior manager/leadership to be the Fastest, Highest Quality, Most Customer Friendly Test Laboratory in the world. Very orgainized Marketing Campaign set forward to establish the name of UL as the leader in product safety, (TV Commercials, Sponsered events, Child Videos, Safety Smart). Excellent Work life balance, (flexible work schedules, work from home, core hours,). Excellent benifit package, (401K matching structure, vacation accural policy, free safety shoes, free eyeglasses, company ball game outings, employee appreciation day, fitness center on campus, as well as vollyball, basketball, baseball fields, etc.). Improved Technology, (everyone gets a new laptop computer every 3 years). Excellent test facilities, excellent tools. In previous years had a bad name for poorly paying employees, but conserted efforts undertaken by management in recent years to correct this issue.

Cons

The morale of the staff has not been very high the last 5 years. After many drastic process changes during the 1st half of the decade the later half has seen almost as many, though not as drastic. Certain misguided efforts has given the competion foder to market againts UL. The work enviornment is very tense in some areas but very loose/laid back in other areas of the company. Many bright and talented individuals but a lot of tolerance for under/poor performers, though this has been examined in recent years. Opportunities for under/poor performers to "hide" behind the system(s). Many rules, regulations, standard operating procedures that are constantly changing. Very Bureucratic. Very slow at times. Very much so process ladien. Many hands involved in process, which can inhibit quick decisions and actions. Some inconsistancies in engineeirng judgements. Selection process on individuals who get promoted is questioned in many areas throughout the company. Great and bright performers sometimes not identified immediately. Poor reputation for having bad managers.

Pros

The company's Mission is vital. I saw the value of the services UL provided.

Cons

As an employee, I was severely underpaid compared to similar roles in my industry. Each year, the company scaled back benefits in terms of health coverage. It became worse when they went public. The focus became turning a profit at the expense of employee job satisfaction.

Pros

None. Since becoming public, the only thing that matters is the share price. The "mission" that is talked about now and then really means nothing. Extremely disappointed in what's become of this company.

Cons

The only thing that matters is the share price, and making sure we look good to investors. The internal IT "tools" are absolutely awful. To get a client's address changed takes probably 6 months and numerous email...nobody is held accountable. No oversight on the work from home policy. The policy is that you should be in the office 3 days...many don't come in at all and barely do anything, and nobody cares. You have select employees that carry the load. Compensation and especially compensation differentiation for performance is terrible...it really doesn't matter what you do as long as you don't cause problems...so many just stay in the shadows and never, ever come to the office, and are compensated the same. Prices keep increasing to appear to add share price value, but in reality we're losing customers as a result.
