Pros

I can't think of any.

Cons

- To write a single line of code you need to join UBS workspace then to another Windows VM (basically two nested Windows machines) - UBS workspace will log you out of VM when you're inactive and you will have to do 6-7 steps again to connect to workspace and VM - Sometimes business people don't know what they are doing, thus you do not have clear requirements or mocks - A lot of security layers literally kill your passion for software development - There is dedicated team who develops React component library for internal use but all they do is to import and overwrite styles of Ant Design - This makes hard to use those components and basically I would say those developers are waste of money, you can use Ant Design and assign those developers to another projects instead of hiring new ones - You cannot even update VSCode because of security layers - You don't know anyone else besides your line manager - And many more...

Pros

Good hours, a lot of old people who love paper

Cons

Highly bureaucratic; face time is valued more than technical skillset or subject matter expertise. Limited career advancement; no raises in between promotions which might happen every 3-7 years. Managers are incompetent and have antiquated mindsets on best practices (i.e. they love physical filing and printing powerpoint presentations)

Pros

Good salary & benefits Good experience Lots of interesting work New dedicated building in the City

Cons

I believe I got unlucky with the team at UBS. The manager and 90% of other senior people and BAs were originally from India (I was in a Front Office IT BA role in London though). The culture felt drastically different to most of other Financial Services firm in the City I worked at. Overwork, understaffing, burnout, constant attacks from management, army-like bullying are the norm. The head of the IT department came from the trading desk and he brought the cut-throat competitive desk culture into IT, where it's very harmful (I doubt it can be helpful in any business really). More of it, this place will attempt to drain all of life out of you via giving you 5 times more than you can handle. This will to make you so weak, that they can start changing your very personality. The management likes meek, obedient workers who never say No to anything, who never challenge things. Staying below the radar and only thinking about your own political interests was the only viable strategy to survive and to avoid attacks. When I felt I started becoming part of the system, I left.
