Lots of downsides. Appraisal is a mere eyewash.Not at all transparent. No recognition given for the efforts you put in. Really bad management. Your immediate middle level managers are white elephants.Technically incompetent people and don't have management skills.They just are after extracting the work from you without giving any recognition or appreciation for your efforts.

TCS is top heavy. There was hardly much chance for career growth. In Kolkata TCS was easily the biggest and oldest s/w company - so the easily the most senior people were to be found there. TCS was considered to be a "safe" employer - though recent developments have junked that notion. So what happened was that attrition out of tcs kolkata was very low - which meant that career growth was very limited due to people not moving out. Also the it helped if you were connected to the right people - you needed to have the right connections to get an onsite opportunity.
