The good and the bad

Pros

You'll work with interesting colleagues who are generally supportive. The work is sometimes very absorbing and you can get a real sense of achievement out of it. Good opportunities for career progression.

Cons

The hours are often long and the pay is not that great considering. Clients can be irritating in the same way that readers can annoy librarians.

Pros

You learn how to be a professional, the training is fantastic and the networking opportunities are valuable. You get to join the Big 4 club and that stays with you for the rest of your career.

Cons

It is just grueling. There is a solid reason that people leave and turnover is high. The whole structure of the firm requires to over-work the staff and managers. It's tough for families.

Pros

The opportunity to work with large clients on large transactions (although this is also available at the other Big 4 accounting firms).

Cons

work life balance is not always a priority, remuneration compared to industry is not good (especially for the amount of hours worked).
