Pros

1. A select few engineers in the Graz office are exceptionally skilled and dedicated. If you have the opportunity to work with them closely, it can be a significant learning experience. However, be aware that this chance isn't guaranteed for everyone (refer to Cons). 2. If a balanced work-life ratio is important to you, this office could be a suitable place. Local management does not impose excessive pressure, fostering a relaxed work environment. Keep in mind, however, that many companies are now offering similar or improved work-life balance options in the wake of the pandemic. 3. ION is an international organization with a wide reach. If you're looking to diversify your professional experience, they have a program enabling team changes. This can provide an exciting dynamism to your career trajectory. 4. Unlike some companies that alternated between mass hiring and layoffs between 2021 and 2023, ION demonstrated remarkable stability and professionalism during this period. This lack of "irrational exuberance" is commendable and provides a sense of security.

Cons

Contrary to other reviews suggesting the problems are confined to the parent company, my experience at the Graz office was not entirely positive. 1. An entrenched "old boys' club" culture dominates the Graz office. Their control over even basic software engineering tasks may impede the progress of those who wish to contribute more significantly. 2. The workplace requires resilience, with harsh confrontations not uncommon, regardless of one's status as a new consultant or a long-standing contributor. 3. For early-career software engineers, the learning opportunities are valuable initially. However, for senior staff, the deeply entrenched knowledge silos can hamper personal growth. 4. The office provides limited opportunities for vertical and, as noted earlier, horizontal growth. 5. Vanity projects abound. While these might usually be intriguing for engineers, poor execution often diminishes their intellectual reward. 6. The HR department can be challenging to deal with, sometimes adopting a confrontational approach. In contrast to many tech HR departments, there is no pretense of friendliness - which, depending on your perspective, could be seen as refreshingly honest.
