Pros

About the only thing positive in this salon are the clients that come in and they actually do maintain a dress code.

Cons

I worked in the Mason City location on 5th Street. I love the company great clips having assistant managed a different one, but this store was very poorly managed as it is not fully affiliated and doesn't abide by all the great clips standards. They did not have any cleaning sanitizer on hand for any of the stylists to use, however if they did the stylists in that salon are poorly trained at following state laws. They kept and reused the same dirty hair filled towels in their drawer to wipe their scissors off after every client without sanitizing, Witnessed all stylist reusing their clippers on clients without cleaning them in between( since they had no sanitizer) even the salon manager did this which is completely against state law. The break room was very unkept and disgusting. Hair was built up on the floor because it was not cleaned in such a long time. This includes the reception drawers and front desk with equipment. Combs at the end of night that they use on clients were not properly sanitized sitting in solution for the time it should to properly sanitize equipment. Overall I could not believe the manager was so lazy to not make sure Iowa laws were being met for the safety of the public and stylists. Next, I was hired Full time knowing full time hours range from 35-40. However i was still not receiving this as the manager brought on another stylist wanting her job back that with not enough hours to give to stylists. On slow days, manager would send home stylists really early which happened to be frequently leaving a full time stylist with part time hours. Hard to make a living this way.

A good place to start out

Pros

If you are just starting out this is a good place to build your skills and confidence. It is also good for the stylist who is ready to retire and just wants to cut hair and not deal with full service.

Cons

This is NOT a place to build a career. You will work very hard for $8 an hour plus tips. Benefits, if offered by your franchise owner, are dependent upon working "full time" which is next to impossible to do. If the salon is slow you will be sent home. If it is busy you are expected to stay past your shift or come in on your day off to help out. You are graded monthly on how well you perform the "five steps" that all stylist are required to do with each client. You must say "Welcome to Great Clips" every time a client enters, use your mirror to show them the back of their head BEFORE you do their hair, you must complete each haircut within 13-17 minutes, and sell a minimum of 6% in product sales. If you fall short you are written up and belittled. Most stylists last a few months and move on. You are required to work a flexible schedule that changes weekly. You have no set days off . You basically live your life around Great Clips.

Great Clips is a franchised company and each location is independently owned and operated by franchisees who may use a number of different factors to determine total compensation and benefits. If you would like follow up, please email Jeanne@greatclips.com with the salon location where you are employed and details.
