Pros
The pay is great, although possibly unsustainbly so based on layoffs
Cons
Deliveroo rescinded their offer to me, despite the contract being signed, after I had resigned from my current job and leaving me unemployed in a Tech Market hiring crash and cost of living crisis. A recruiter of theirs reached out to me on Linkedin in September 2022 (I did not directly apply for the job), and after a few weeks of interviews I was offered a compelling enough package to accept and sign the offer. At this point I handed in my notice at my current employer, which was 3 months. By December 2022, I understood that Deliveroo had put hiring freezes in place and was reviewing all outstanding job offers. I reached out to them to clarify the stability of my offer, and received no reply for ~1 week. After this, I received a phone call to let me know they could no longer honour the offer based on tough markets / hiring freezes. Needless to say it had significant disruption to my life, and I was unemployed for ~5 months as a result (paying rent in London). Full disclosure that they did pay me a month of what would have been my salary in recognition of this disruption. When I was applying for jobs during this time, after anonymously explaining my circumstances, some recruiters at other companies correctly guessed that the company I was talking about was Deliveroo, indicating to me that they are building a reputation for this across the industry. On top of this, an acquaintance of mine was put in the same position at the start of 2020, when his signed contract was rescinded a week prior to his start date. I know there were redundancies during 2023 as well, and sympathise with any employees who were impacted during that time. The individuals I interacted with throughout the process (recruiters, hiring managers) were friendly and professional, and I imagine just as disappointed at the outcome as I was. In retrospect, I am glad to have avoided working for this company, as I think this indicates poor and / or unsustainable strategic decisions and management.
