Pros

Invests heavily in R&D, has many learning opportunities if you are willing to go the extra mile, flexible work hours, very talented young engineering pool, great benefits and competitive pay, loads of travel opportunities, great place for a starting engineer to get experience in many areas

Cons

culture that stifles new ideas, bureaucratic and red tape, bad mid-level management, worse executive management, history-book example of how not to use 6-sixma, have to deal with midwest weather, has a lot of economic waste, encourages "yes" man culture, management does not like to hear bad news, Open discussions are not encouraged

Pros

Much opportunity to move horizontally and vertically throughout your career. They want to hire employees and retain them for a career rather than a job. Excellent pay and good benefits. A respected company to place on a resume if you do choose to move on later in your career.

Cons

Bureaucracy is certainly present at times but it goes along with a large organization. Many people are not crazy about Peoria, IL but Caterpillar obviously has offices throughout the world. Culture can be very "old school". Generational gaps are apparent at times considering many people have worked there for 20-30 years.

Stable but Slow to Change

Pros

Caterpillar is a solid, diversified company. They hire some of the best talent available. Benefits are on par with competition in this industry. Caterpillar has leading technology and invests heavily in research and development.

Cons

Caterpillar is slow to change and has difficulty keeping up with industry changes in personnel policies(ie work from home, daycare, etc). Caterpillar struggles with upperward feedback and sees different opinions as negative. This is a "top" down company and there is little respect given to employees with other experiences.
