      Used to be a good place to work.

      Pros

      Used to be Lehman and when it was Lehman, it was a much better place to work for. It hasn't had much layoff yet, which is a great thing, and your experience highly depend on which group you work.

      Cons

      Some managers are downright nasty, mean and that is one of the reasons some people left the firm, most other mangers are fine. The compensation structure for associate is too fair, or unfair to put in another way. Every incoming associates are paid pretty much the same in the first two years, giving us no incentives to work hard as long as you don't worry about layoff. There is no difference between PhD and other associates in terms of promotion although they have called senior associates.

      Pros

      Relatively stable bank in today's market. One of the few still hiring. As always your experience will vary from one group to another but in general most people are very helpful, middle management is very approachable. Mostly a meritocracy. Some very smart and hardworking people in IT. The CIO has assembled a good team of direct reports and they are doing a very decent job of executing his vision of building an industry leading platform. The firm seems to follow Bob Diamond's "No jerk" policy

      Cons

      Hours...did I say that before long hours. Probably not any worse than at another IB, but maintaining a work life balance is difficult if not impossible.

      Pros

      Great atmosphere, people are excellent and fun to be with. I really enjoy working with people with the advanced technology that we have. Great location as well in New York, around all the best places to eat for lunch and dinner if you stay in the office late once or twice. Management is strong and the direction of the company can been viewed with confidence. Respect is also valued a lot and they do not mistreat people there. Some of the friendships I built at Barclays I will keep for the rest of my life, so keep a watch on this company!

      Cons

      Management has a hard time giving time off for people. Snide comments are sometime present. It is helpful to be nice and build relationships - the environment really fosters that.
