Pros

Extremely flexible schedule and variety of project industries. Culture is awesome and everyone is super friendly, tons of events at the office and after work.

Cons

Fewer projects nowadays have led to furloughs and unstable job security. The pay is significantly under average for the industry (20-30% underpaid) and they got rid of bonuses. The benefits have been getting cut over the years. The company wants to grow and hires like crazy, just to fire a dozen people a couple of months later, makes no sense.

Pros

There use to be a good in office atmosphere (2022). You can have a lot of responsibility and if you have a willingness to give up much of your life you can gain a lot of experience quickly

Cons

A lot. There is not senior management that focuses on strategy, as a BM we were at time (repeatedly) to hire more engineers, then a couple of weeks later we were told to fire engineers (one of many examples). Some of the managers will stab you in the back, and I know of some 'coach' managers who stole the accounts of their team in the process getting them fired. The business priorities on reducing cost with out understanding the impact on quality, the company already knows that the pay is in the bottom quartile of salaries in the UK but will not make a change. preferring to instead sell the benefits of exposure to other industries to compensate for this, however as most engineers are fired after their first project this is of no benefit, and for the other functions like BMs most leave in less than 2 years and so it too offers little cv benefit. you will be micromanaged, not all the senior managers are bad I can think of 2 who I really like, but the rest are either terrible humans or are very new in the business and likely will not last long. the MD has pulled all the BM team in a meeting and showed a ranking of everyone, regardless of if they were new to the business there for a while or any other qualifier. all but 4 were underperforming (out of 40) targets and metrics - the targets are impossible, and the metrics are pointless. Creating a lot of friction and frustration. and action to change the ways of working that might risk slowing the metrics is strangled in its infancy. I know of 2 BMs who took long term sick leave due to mental health issue caused by the job. and final point i can be bothered writing, if you do not like lying to engineers (most of whom are young and idealistic) or your clients you will start to find this role sole sucking after about 6 months at best.

Pros

Benefits and PTO are slightly above average for a contracting house. While my overall experience with this company was negative, there were one or two individual people who were sincerely trying to do their best. These business unit managers demonstrated a commitment to their employees and were willing to listen to feedback and concerns in order to improve the work environment. While these positive experiences were outweighed by the negative aspects of the company, I believe it's important to acknowledge the efforts of individual managers who were committed to creating a better workplace for their employees.

Cons

The management style was very top-down and authoritarian, with little opportunity for input or feedback from employees. I felt like the well-being or career growth of employees were not a concern for Alten USA. After a while, I was compelled to accept a role that didn't align with my skills or experience. This showed a poor understanding of the business that the company is in. Despite my efforts to negotiate with Alten, they remained inflexible and responded with "management has made that decision for you." This lack of transparency and input in decision-making was demotivating and made it difficult to feel invested in my work. It also demonstrated a lack of trust in employees and a disregard for their expertise and input. I was not provided with the necessary support to help me meet my goals. For example, I did not have access to the software and equipment required to complete my tasks efficiently, and there was no budget for professional development or training opportunities. This lack of support made it difficult to meet the expectations of my role and led to a sense of frustration and demotivation. Things only went downhill from there. It seemed as though Alten had set me up to fail. I started to notice that my situation was impacting my health and well-being. I ultimately felt compelled to leave Alten. The toxic work environment, authoritarian management style, and lack of support or recognition for my work made it impossible to feel valued or respected as an employee. I would caution anyone considering employment with Alten to be aware of the potential risks to their health and well-being.
